The Troy Ohio Police Department has gratefully accepted a $12,800 grant from The Troy Foundation to replace equipment for its Safe-T-Town program for incoming kindergarteners.
Safe-T-Town is conducted each summer by Troy's three School Resource Officers (SROs). The weeklong program teaches children everyday safety lessons and allows them to practice pedestrian and school bus safety. Other topics include stranger awareness, fire and electrical safety, safety around water, and more. Safe-T-Town is provided to Troy's families free of charge.
Mayor Robin Oda said, "The Safe-T-Town program has been a very popular and longstanding summer activity for elementary-age kids for several decades. The current equipment is 30-some years old and badly in need of updating. We are grateful to The Troy Foundation for awarding the grant to the program and we can't wait to see the kiddos using the new equipment this summer!"
Said Chief Shawn McKinney, "The mats, big wheel bikes, and structures used at Safe-T-Town have served us for many years. We can be sure that supplies purchased with this grant will serve the children of Troy for years to come."
Registration for Safe-T-Town begins April 1 through the Troy Recreation Department.
