The Troy Police Department has gratefully accepted a grant of $25,264.04 from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) to perform high-visibility enforcement from April through September this year. The grants will fund extra patrols along roadways this summer, with officers targeting impaired driving, seat belt use, speed, and distracted driving. These high-visibility patrols aim to reduce crashes in the City of Troy, specifically fatal and serious injury crashes.
Police Chief Shawn McKinney says that drivers will see more officers patrolling roadways this summer, to reduce serious crashes. He said, "In the last five years, there have been eight fatal and 25 serious injury crashes within the city. Our goal is always to bring that number down."
McKinney says that previous targeted enforcement helped to lower crashes in which alcohol was a factor. In 2024, Troy saw six fewer DUI-related crashes than in the previous year, a reduction of 25 percent.
The grant funding goes into use during April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This awareness effort brings together national, state, and local organizations to remind drivers never to text or scroll while driving.
